Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., Ali won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He became the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship on three separate occasions. Beyond the ring, Ali was a key figure in the African American civil rights movement and is remembered for his charisma, his quick rhymes (‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’), and his firm stance against the Vietnam War.
